A few tips on using the site for English members

Post by Saul » Mon Aug 25, 2008 19:43

Because this is a predominantly Russian language site there will be a few problems with things like reply and new topic buttons etc being in Russian. There is a very simple way to find out what these things mean. Just hover your mouse pointer over any button or text link and look in the bottom left of your browser window.

For example, if you were to put your mouse pointer over the fourth from left text link in the horizontal menu at the top of the page you will see in the bottom left of your browser window it reads :
http://www.irinushka.eu/forum/memberlist.php

That obviously refers to the site member list. Always look at the last part of the text to find out what it is.

If there is another way around this problem that anyone can suggest we would be very happy to hear about it :)

Wouldn't it be possible to create a completely new and separate forum in english? Would it be more complicated to manage or take more space?

I ask because a "normal" person (i.e. a person who has no connection with russian language and people (no friends, no partners, no family members, etc.)) could be stopped or "slightly distressed" by the fact that the registration information and questions are in russian. Also the trick of hovering the mouse on the buttons is not bad, but we know how lazy and picky can be a person on the internet... :)

All of this supposing that the forum commands, buttons, instructions, etc. are originally in english, therefore are already available...

Well I'll just wait till you guys sorted to go online and live, and will be happy to be part of it. Massimo got the point, so Saul we will wait for your comment about the buttons etc.

Good to "see" you Massimo :)

Thank you, good to "see" you too, Slava! :)

I really hope we (the two of us, Saul, and everybody else who likes it) will soon start exchanging our experiences and ideas in this "english" place.

Massimo! Saul! :D Welcome! :D
It is really so wonderful that you like to share with us your thoughts and ideas! I think it would be a very interesting and valuable experience for all of us. I’m really looking forward to know more about your view on what is up on our planet and your view on the transformational process and of course on all kind of different subjects that we discuss here.

Hi Margarita and Massimo. I understand the difficulties for those perhaps not as used to computers and/or the internet as some of us are and I will try and sort that out one way or another, especially with regard to the registration page.

The problem with splitting the forum up so that there is a separate English one is you lose the sense of community. In my opinion it would be better to keep us all in one place so those who are bi lingual can easily share thoughts across the forum and this can be seen instantly by anyone who visits the site.

I will have a look at perhaps having a dual language registration page, I have an idea how that might work but not sure If I can get it to work in practice.

It's been a very long day but I will try and find an hour or so to look into this tonight :)

1. Hi all ;)
2. Sorry for terrible english ;)
3. Is it possible to set buttons/messages language in profile? Or forum engine doesn`t support such future(s)? Unfortunately I'm not a PHP programmer ;) to try to looking at this ;)
4. i so different texts under nick in many phpBB forums. Can this be used to place "alternative" nick, in english? ;) Something like:

You can set your language preference in your profile and we have the encoding on the site now set so that both English and Cyrillic will display correctly no matter if you set English or Russian in your profile.

The problem with the buttons is they are set globally for the whole forum. I expect an expert php programmer might be able to write or amend the code to allow separate selection but that is beyond my capability as I work mostly with html and only basic php.

I guess it will have to be a compromise for all of us but I am sure given time, we will all become used to the features of the forum no matter what language they are in :)

Oh and adding your alternative nick in English or Russian is possible but it would have to be done under the "ranks" setting and this would be a long and tedious process, having to be done separately for each individual user. The best way would be to add your nick to your signature, which you can do in your profile page.

Hi Irinushka

Thanks for your kind words. I am back at home now and feeling much better. I have never experienced pain like that in my life before and I hope I never have to experience it again!

I'm happy to lend my support and help to the site in whatever way I can :)
